Artist: Mercia Deale

Originally from Centurion, Pretoria, but now living and working in Clarens, Free State, South Africa, she mainly focuses on charcoal sketches, but also does oil paintings, using a technique to manipulate the oil paint so that it almost works as charcoal. Like many artists, she experiments with various mediums and techniques and find that mostly, the mood and emotion inspires a technique, colour use and medium.

The human form, especially the curves and lines inspires her to sketch & paint nudes and semi-nudes. She tries to capture that fleeting moment where light and shadow dances across the body. She does not see her art as fitting into any category, or style, but tends to capture the human form as the eye would see it. Why nudes? She feels it is the only way we can confront who we are, emotionally and physically, and learn to accept our bodies and eventually ourselves.

For her, the process of creating art is an emotional journey and in many cases very therapeutic. Her wish is for people to enjoy art, no matter in what form, and to realize that their bodies, in itself, is a piece of art. This driving force compelled her to open Essensual Art Galley, allowing visitors and artists alike to celebrate the human form.

"The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance."
