Artist: Stephan van Heerden
Stephan van Heerden is a part time painter and a full time Social Worker. He was born on 27 January 1967 in Welkom and is married with 2 children. The discovery of his artistic soul came hand in hand with his discovery of being a therapist - both was discovered when he was little. He started painting when he was just 9 and sold his first painting when he was 12. According to his mother, Stephan walked around with pen and paper in hand and constantly made plans to help people "feel better". At the age of 15 he decided to become a social worker.

He has no formal training in art. Painting was his biggest passion as a boy - part because oils fascinated him and part because he discovered a magical world where his paint brush and paint could connect with other people. A place where he could be himself without prejudice, where people could meet without boundaries and accept each other. Stephan used his art to express himself, in the process losing his stutter as a child.

Hy beskou skoonheid as ‘n gawe.

Painting isn't an aesthetic operation; it's a form of magic
designed as a mediator between this strange, hostile world and us, a way of seizing the power by giving form to our terrors as well as our desires.
